Hawaii -5- First day excursion and ball game

  See you all in the morning. I opened my window, the trade winds are rustling the palm trees below and I can hear the water gentle lapping the shoreline and rocks. Ah, Heaven.

  ‎Kat, Kathy, Christine, any one else up for an afternoon softball game? I challenged the locals I met earlier and volunteered our group. We do need more players... anyone? (Remember in fantasy we can be any age, shape, stamina we want to be.) Who's volunteering to pitch?

      Dawn Janov Thanks for the great game, we really "hit it out of the ball park" Greatest pitcher ever. You and Christine are quite the team. But the locals were great sports and invited us all to a private luau at one of their homes. Yahoo.... double score.

  The ancient Hawaiians were fit. The traditional Hawaiian diet may have been "one of the best in the world". It was a simple, high starch, high fiber, low saturated fat, low sodium and low cholesterol diet. It had 12 percent protein, 18 percent fat and 70 percent carbohydrates.   After the field tour, they did have some taro chips, poi and other taro based food. Loved the taro chips but not so sure about poi. Did you know that as long as the Hawaiian people have poi on the table, there can be no fighting or arguing. Hmmm, maybe I could serve some up at the local political rallies. 

  
  "Poi, a glutinous purple paste made from pounded taro root (one of the most nutritious carbohydrates known) is the staple starch food of the Hawaiians. Poi had great significance in the Hawaiian culture, as it represents Haloa, the ancestor of chiefs and kanaka maoli (Native Hawaiians). There was a great reverence for the presence of poi at the table. It was unforgivable to have a quarrel, argue or haggle when poi was on the table. Pleasant conversation and heartiness was promoted.

      Chris I'm with you Dawn, the taro chips were pretty good, but I think poi is something that you must have to grow up with to love.

  We are off in our limos. First excursion a morning tour of the nearby Taro Fields. Kauai is the biggest producer of Taro in Hawaii.
